RPS post an incredible leaked video for LiveSpace, an upcoming virtual world accessible through pretty much any device. LiveSpace uses server side rendering (instead of client side rendering) and simply sends you the end result. This means that any phone, browser or computer capable of receiving the rendered result will be able to connect and interact in LivePlace. By taking the onus off the client, LivePlace can roll out anything as long as their servers can take up the slack.
I find technology like this equally amazing and disturbing. This level of realism has the potential to suck people into a world that is so customisable and changeable, that they’d rather live in it than out of it. Of course, that’s not LiveSpace’s fault, but the fault of addiction and lack of sense!
The video shows highly rendered, photo realistic scenes and occasionally basic ones - especially of the suburbs. However, I’m unsure whether suburbs look real when you’re in them, due to their prim and proper, grid like design, so don’t blame LivePlace! Also lacking are realistic organic models. Urban environments are easier to recreate as they are primarily straight lines and blocks. I’d love to see trees moving in the wind, leaves blowing down the street and reactive water. The only water you see in LivePlace is dead calm, mirror reflective stuff.
If LivePlace is this realistic we’re bound to see advertising and corporate sponsorship which will inevitably taking the heart and soul out of something this powerful, amazing and open.
We’ll have to wait and see if the technology and the environment lives up to this leaked video.
Rage is, believe it or not, being developed platform agnostically for all major operating systems and consoles. This means we’ll see Rage on our Macs. Kind of unbelievable isn’t it?
