StarCraft II delayed

Blizzard:

Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.

Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010.

We will share more details about the beta, Battle.net, and StarCraft II’s launch in the future. Keep an eye on the official website at www.starcraft2.com for updates, and as always, thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support for StarCraft II and all of Blizzard Entertainment’s games.

There were some rumours about a potential delay a few weeks ago, something about shareholders, franchises and, meh, business! If it makes a better game, fine with me.

WoW: Dwarf vs. Giant

I think I am in my prime at age 25, but when it comes to WoW, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Trying to get time to sit down and play has been a real struggle these last few weeks. Wedding tasks, moving, getting the flu, job; all these things prevent me from leveling up. Despite these hurdles I have gotten some time in.

I created a dwarf, Brulox. This turned out to be more interesting than I anticipated. I told the fiance about my character and that he was a dwarf. She asked if that was the same as a midget/little person. I replied that in some ways, yes they are, height being an example. In others, not at all. Dwarves are much more hostile and more likely to drink than your neighborhood midget. This made some sense to her (most little people we have been in contact with seem to be very well mannered). She then wanted to know if these dwarves were the same as those in the Lord of the Rings, “you know, Frodo style”. Again I explained the differences to her, hoping that tackling it from a genesis perspective might yield some results.

Interview with Chris Bentley from AMD

Whenever I call Chris Bentley, Mac 3D Manager from AMD, it’s always 10AM and the questions are heavy: Tell me secrets! Explain quantum mechanics! It’s either one or the other. And put it this way, I don’t know any secrets or understand quantum mechanics. Yet. But what I do know is that AMD are committed developers and they’ve got a great team working to make drivers for OS X better and faster. Score!

My latest my latest batch of questions for Chris are below, so take your seats and read all about drivers and cards for OS X, the challenges, the heart ache, and the history of 3D games on the platform.

I will pilfer all of AMD’s secrets from Chris. One day. Not sure about understanding quantum mechanics though…

WoW: Wrath of the Lich King

Wired have some super too-cool-for-school images of the launch of Wrath of the Lich King:

If World of Warcraft is your medicine, today is a big day. If, like me, you’re a recovering addict: it’s temptation. Sweet temptation.
