Things have been a bit quiet on the old Mac gaming front of late. But here we go, Apple breaks the silence with 10.5.6, the latest iteration of their pretty-oh-so-pretty operating system.
Typically Apple are tight lipped about what they update. Honestly, if they could get away with it their update notes would simply list stuff. Today is no different: feast your eyes upon this, included in the latest support note for 10.5.6:
Graphics
- Includes general improvements to gaming performance.
- Includes graphics improvements for iChat, Cover Flow, Aperture, and iTunes.
- Includes fixes for possible graphics distortion issues with certain ATI graphics cards.
Gaming. News. From. Apple.
This is as good as it gets, you hairy mothers. Now, let me fish out my BF2142 DVD and see if that old chestnut is actually playable.
My Mac Pro is now beckoning me to restart my machine to apply 10.5.6. If the screen goes blank and the third dimension drops away, something went wrong. Blame Apple.
So I’ve been playing Spore. A lot. It’s a huge game. It’s vast and it’s different. Reviewing it has been troublesome, but don’t worry I’ll be posting something soon.
In other news: I bought (well, rented) a Ventrilo server! The Mac Gamer now has an official voice server! If you’d like an account to chat about games or play with other users on BF2142, EVE, WoW or ET:QW - drop me an email.
There isn’t many people online at the moment, just a handful of mates who use (gasp) PC’s, but hopefully there are some Mac users out there who want to play and converse in grunts and whistles.

63 days after the BF2142 1.5 patch for PC was released, pissed off Mac users can finally download the patch for Mac which includes the new maps: Operation Shingle (pretty darned good) and Wake Island (pretty darned crap). If, like me, you’ve also got BF2142 for PC, this will all seem rather old. That’s because it is.

Initial fear of ET:QW has given way to admiration. Not only have Aspyr done a stellar job of porting the plucky GDF and gnarly Strogg to the Mac, but id and Splash Damage (the original developers of the game) have created a mutliplayer worthy of attention.
I explained a while ago that the silly fastness of ET:QW in contrast to the simplicity of BF2142 had unnerved me. That has now passed.

Mac users have been left out in the cold once again by EA, DICE and Transgaming, with the 1.5 patch for Mac still in development weeks after the same patch has been released for PC. The 1.5 patch for PC was released nearly two months ago, bringing new content and performance tweaks. Mac users are unable to play on any server that has updated (about 99% of them).
