The galaxy is a messy place and I’m stuck smack in the middle of it with nothing but a crap shuttle, a few credits, and a functioning pair of balls between my legs. I’m currently in Nation Earth States territory, an amalgamation of several systems controlled by humans with a distinctly militaristic attitude. There’s a few other factions out there controlling other chunks of the galaxy and sooner or later I’ll have to deal with them, befriend them, fight them, or outrun them, but I’ll manage none of it in this shuttle.

When Apple announced this years Apple Design Awards would focus entirely on iPhone OS development it caught the geek world by suprise, though if you look closely it was entirely unsurprising. Apple has always taken great liberty with the ADA categories using them to shine the spotlight on whatever software initiative they’re pushing at the time. It’s important to put this years ADA’s into perspective. This isn’t the Academy Awards suddenly eliminating all the acting categories and leaving only the technical achievement awards, but it does feel that way.
While other websites with bags of blood money are able to get iPads shipped over from New York, here at TMG I outfitted each of our writers with a large magnifying glass for their iPhone instead. I’m not cheap, I’m cost conscious.
Anyway, Bit-tech have put together a decent look at the iPad and some early games. They’ve even got some moving pictures, also known as video:
The iPad has been covered extensively throughout the media, and as with all our coverage, we wanted anything we wrote to be unique, technical and interesting to you, our readers, so we’ve initially decided to take a look at how the iPad fares as a gaming device. This area has been under-explored in other reviews, or dealt with quite badly - so Joe and Alex have spent the last few days playing a variety of games on the iPad, and we’ve got both our impressions of the device for gaming, and how the games themselves are.
We’ve reviewed eight different iPad games over the next few pages, and we also took some video of the games in action…the video will give you an idea of how the iPad runs, how quickly the games load up and what they’re like…
Our thoughts on the iPad for gaming, a mobile replacement and a paradigm shift in computing. Continue reading ‘iPad’
In many ways choosing whether to invest in creating a game for the App Store is a little like deciding whether or not to invest in a third world country run by a colorful despot. Sure it’s rich in resources and opportunities but your investment could also fall prey to its unpredictable bureaucracy and market. In short the App Store is a little like Venezuela and Chavezland: there is money to be had in the land of Steve. The question is how to approach it. There is no better comparative study in my mind than Skee-Ball and Ramp Champ.
Skee-Ball sells for $0.99 (and has since release) and is #1 in the Paid Apps in the US. Ramp Champ sells for $1.99 and doesn’t show up in the Top 100 Apps or Games. It would be easy to call this a case of frugality trumping design but this isn’t about the $1 difference. There are apps that cost $1.99 or higher that are in the Top 10 or Top 25. There’s something else going on here. I bought both games and settled in for some quality time.
