WoW: Communication is Key

Lately I’ve been running into communication issues while playing with pug and raid mates. I don’t know if it’s summer time daze or what, but whatever the reason communication has been less than stellar.

Recently I was doing my daily random and got Utgarde Keep. I was doing pretty decent damage throughout the instance, averaging around 8K DPS on bosses. We were cruising through the instance with no problems. I was happy. We had just dealt with the trash in front of King Ymiron, the last boss. I said, trying to be helpful, “hold for second.  I need mana.”  I thought it was a reasonable request.  Suddenly I was booted from the group. This is the first time this has happened to me and I am still baffled by what I did wrong.  A little “hey, just a gem and an evocation” or something similar would have gone a long way.  All I know is the incident left me both confused and frustrated.

I thought it was a bit rude to kick without warning.  I’ve been in a few runs where one player was a little over anxious and pulling too soon.  Been in runs where healers weren’t healing.  Been in runs with tanks who weren’t in their tanking specs.  All it takes is a friendly reminder from the group asking them to correct the issue.  My advice is if somebody is doing something you don’t like, tell them (but be nice!).  Chances are they aren’t doing whatever they’re doing to be a jerk.  I know whatever I was doing wrong, I didn’t mean to be doing it.  If somebody had given me the courtesy of a whisper I would have fixed it.

Yesterday, I ran into another communication problem after our raid of ICC.  We had a fairly good run. Lots of new people playing but we still cleared the first 4 bosses with just one wipe.  After the raid a mage whispered me: “You were pretty cheap with your focus magic.”  I told him I didn’t mean to be, I was experimenting with a frost spec for trash so the switching back and forth between specs caused the focus magic to go away.  It wasn’t on purpose.  I explained all he had to do was politely remind me to hit the group with focus magic.  To which he replied, “That should be a given.” To which I replied with this article.  I think it’s important for all players to remember they are playing with other people.  Therefore other people are going to make mistakes and be forgetful.  A friendly reminder can go a long way.

The moral of this story: people aren’t mind readers (well, most aren’t), people don’t mean to be jerks (well, most don’t).  We are all playing the game with a similar goal: to have fun.  It can be a whole lot more fun if you communicate your needs in a pleasant manner to those around you.
