WoW: No Free Lunch

Yesterday I had an appointment with my Doctor, Joe.  I know my weight has gotten a little high with age and so has my cholesterol.  I’m not a stupid guy, I realize I need to eat better and I probably should be on a statin to help me control the cholesterol.  Problem is, I wasn’t thrilled about the statin because last time I tried one it gave me some muscle pain.  I told Joe this, to which he responded, “John, buddy, there are no free lunches. Everything comes with a trade off.”  Therefore, I need to deal with a little bit of short term pain for long term gain.

Why I am bringing this up on a World of Warcraft post?  Well, for one I need to play less WoW and more tennis and hit my punch bag more. But the main reason is while playing WoW I ran into the worst case of begging I have ever seen.

I am minding my own business in Stormwind buying some materials.  Suddenly somebody opens up a trade window with me.  I take a step to the side figuring this was a mistake.  The window closes.  The window pops open again. It was clear this wasn’t an accident. I notice the person who wants to trade is a level 40 warrior. For our purposes we’ll call him ANNOY_DUDE.  Our conversation went like this:

Me: Yes?
ANNOY_DUDE: 10 GP.
Me: Excuse me?
ANNOY_DUDE: I need 10 GP.
Me: Sorry.
ANNOY_DUDE: I need 10 GP for a sword.
Me: Dude, the game is fair.  If you need money it gives you a way to earn it.
ANNOY_DUDE: You can afford it.  I need a helm.
Me: Sorry I am broke (I was pretty broke, I just bought a ton of gems and enchants for my new gear and my repair bill was 100 gold.)
ANNOY_DUDE: How much you got?

At that moment ANNOY_DUDE was added to my ignore list.  He then started jumping up and down in front of me.  I ported away.

The moral of this story: please don’t be like ANNOY_DUDE.  WoW is like life: there are no free lunches.  If you need something you have to work for it or trade something else for it.  Sure there are times when you need help from friends or even strangers but when you do be grateful and not annoying!  Don’t act like you are entitled to something just because you want something.  No good will come from that in real life or in WoW.

Would I have given ANNOY_DUDE gold if he had asked nicely?  Truthfully, I am not sure.  I am not one to give gold to people I don’t know, especially when “I need a new sword” or whatever is the reason. Still, if he had approached me a bit more respectfully I wouldn’t have totally written him off.  So I guess this is the second moral of this story:  if you do need the help of strangers, approach nicely. Like they say, you can get more flies with honey. Of course I’m not sure why anybody wants flies, but that’s a discussion for another day…

Ha! That’s equally funny and ridiculous! I mean the random begging (and not that article)

Maybe he just hit a wall and could no longer bare to work for his WoW money? Mind if that’s the case it’s probably about time you stopped playing the devil that is World of Warcraft!
