Well, Valentines day is just around the corner and of course WoW is greeting the day of love with their annual Warcraft World Wide event: Love is in the Air. I have to admit I am not a huge fan of these events. I guess I’m a pretty shallow player, if something doesn’t help my DPS I’m not that interested in it. In the past I pretty much looked at this event as just a bunch of people clogging my way to the mailbox and squirting me with stuff (Ed - Um?). This year though I decided to expand my WoW horizons and at least experience the event. Who knows, maybe it’s because my wife’s still in Costa Rica attending to her mom’s affairs so I’m extra lonely? Or maybe it’s because my new Mac still makes WoW look new and fresh to me.? Whatever the case I tried it.
All the quests are pretty simple. For most of them you either run around like a fool either douching people with cologne or tossing them candy or checking out their scent. (And really isn’t this what love is all about anyhow, acting foolish and examining scents? I think it has something to do with pheromones.) For the most part these quests are mindless fun and give quick gold and tokens. The good news for “must increase my DPS” me is that one of the items the tokens can be redeemed for is a Wizardry Cologne which increases my DPS by 45 for an hour. It seems stackable with other buffs so I am stocking up on these. Every bit counts. Also killing mobs gives you “lovely charms” which you can turn into a charm bracelet and give to the respective race leaders. In return for your good deed the gifted leader will gift you with a card, the card will buff a stat for an hour. The King of Stormwind’s card buffs intellect, which means more DPS for me. Yes, I have a one track mind.
I am happy to report that the event boss - Apothecaries Hummel, Baxter and Frye - is a fun fight with decent drops. My guild mates and I headed to Shadowfang Keep to tackle Hummel and friends in hope of getting the cool rocket mount he drops. We didn’t read up on him or anything. We figured he’d be easy peasy (okay we didn’t really say peasy) like the Brewfest boss who we can could pretty much 3-man. Our entire strategy was kill the boss then we all roll need for the pet drop (a neat ooze) or the rocket mount. We got wiped fast. We tried it one more time, avoiding the goo the apothecaries toss out. We wiped again albeit lasting longer. Finally being the smart people we are we read the strategy. I won’t go into the strategy as that is discussed at length elsewhere on the web. I’ll just mention that it involves using debuffs the quest giver gives you and a little CCing. Once we had the pattern down we downed the boss again and again. Of course no mount or pet dropped but I was still glad to see this boss was a fun challenge.
All in all, I have to admit I am finding “Love is in the Air” fun. I wouldn’t want it to be around all the time but it’s a nice diversion.
