The Butterfly Effect

CCP has released a rather snazzy video to tempt players into EVE, the greatest and most confusing of all MMOs:

I think everyone at TMG has tried EVE, and then jumped right out, fearful of what it could do to real life relationships and body mass. EVE has a huge learning curve, wonderfully illustrated by this:

Any tips for someone like me, hugely interested in sci-fi in it’s many forms, but who just can’t get into EVE?

The videos are always so VERY pretty. The problem with the game is that you have very little tactical control of your ships. I was expecting something along the lines of ‘Starfleet Command’ or ‘Homeworld’. A guy I work with who plays EVE said it really was more like controlling ‘Microsoft Excel’. He’s sort of right. You enter commands, the game compares stats, makes a few ‘die’ rolls, and some shooting happens on the screen. It was like playing an old school pen&paper tabletop RPG. Honestly, I’ve hard more fun playing ‘Escape Velocity’, and with EVE’s steep learning curve, it’s not really worth it.

Anyone out there tried ‘Vendetta Online’?

That’s funny you mentioned Escape Velocity, I’ve been playing EV Nova this week.

I understand what you mean about the dice rolls, there’s little randomness or skill. You’re not going to beat Huge Frigate because your piloting skills manage to dodge laser fire, it’s up to the Lord of the Dice!

That chart is a very accurate depiction of my experiences with EVE.

As for Escape Velocity, I’ve always preferred Override. Nova told me a story far too directly. The first two games largely left that bit to me with a framework of vague plot elements.

  4. God, that video makes me want to try it again. It’s well produced. As I told Alex in an email this week, EVE’s everything I wanted from a game back when I was 20 and had the time.

I’ve been playing again this evening and I still can’t help but feel that it could be that much cooler, especially interface wise. A bit more ‘in your face’. There’s so much hidden beneath screens and stat pages, that you barely look at what the hell is on screen!
