It’s official: cats love World of Goo!

Not Fallout 3, CoD4 or even SporeWorld of Goo. Maybe it’s the balls, maybe it’s the goo – who knows? But cats love World of Goo. Meow.

Dragging myself away from the marvel of Fallout 3, I decided to give the recently released World of Goo for Mac a bash. Although I’ve played a chunk of the game via CrossOver for Mac, once Ron at 2D Boy let me know there’d be a Mac version, I decided to wait.

Brimming with magnificent, brilliantly designed gravity puzzles dipped in a thick gooey paste, World of Goo oozes high quality from the outset. The design is incredible; oddball, dark, friendly, with a sprinkling of Tim Burton.

In the world comprised of goo there are several different breeds. Some are made of water, others set like concrete. Some are rather abrasive fellows and cause a lot of friction. By forming goo shapes out of the various breeds of gooball you can create huge, leaning towers, giant trapeziums or floating balls of wobbling goo. Their ultimate aim being the mysterious pipe that they get sucked into. But what are these pipes for? Ah, that’s the story – the sprinkling of mystery – that WoG delivers so well.

Spanning five worlds each with bizarre landscapes – from windmill dotted hills to cartoon Tron – WoG tells you the story of the goo, entertains you with a strange concoction of self aware humour and satire, and is still a feast for the eyes.

Honestly, WoG was a  pleasure to review. It’s neat, funny, challenging, without being infuriating. It’s one of the most magical games I’ve played in a long time. It’s neatness, both graphically and in gameplay, is quite stunning. 2D Boy (from the credits, a group of four) have lavished this little title with love. And it shows. It’s a lovely, special game.

Sadly, 2D Boy have estimated that around 80% of copies have been pirated. Worse, 2D Boy purposefully did not include restrictive DRM with WoG as they believe it detracts from the overall experience. Come on guys, this is a small developer who have put their all into making a well designed and original game – support them. Download the demo. If you don’t want to pay for it, don’t pirate it.

WoG is a wonderful, oddball, neat, original game. Many other adjectives too (all good) can be added to the list. Casual game? Na, WoG surpasses casual – epic in execution and ridiculously fun and compact in gameplay, it’s a bloomin’ bargain and a great game for cats (and Macs).

Available now from 2D Boy.
