Fallout 3 for Mac

That’s a lie. There is no Fallout 3 for Mac. But, but! there is an interesting retrospective on Fallout on Eurogamer. With interesting facts such as:

Practically nobody bought the Fallout games. Lifetime sales in the UK, for instance, barely topped 50,000 units for the pair of them. Commercially, they were utterly disastrous. But if you can find one person whodid play them and talks about them with anything other than near-rabid devotion, it’d be quite a feat.

Which is both shocking and secretly pleasing as it means that I’m in a minority of TRUE FANS. Ian’s burst mode? Dogmeat? Harold? Gizmo? Videogame brilliance that’s yet to be bested. Or bettered. Or hell, buttered. I personally feel there should be some sort of test before you’re able to play Fallout 3. I really don’t want the hordes claiming they know what Fallout is about after they’ve played Fallout 3. To be a TRUE FAN you must have played Fallout and Fallout 2 and spat upon the bastard Fallout Tactics. Only then are you worthy to install Fallout 3. Only then…

I will be playing Fallout 3 on my Mac this Friday, unfortunately via Windows, where I will be a true and proper Boot Tramp. Bethseda - get working on a Mac port, eh?

  • woo-hoo right on!!! i feel ashamed that i enjoyed tactics…and brotherhood of steel on the ps2 :) i need gunishment

  • I would never claim to know anything about Fallout but I own 3 for PS3 and it has inspired me to buy the first two for mac out of sheer respect for the Bethseda, and their amazing sense of humor.

  • I have it for 360, but I wish I could play it on my Mac too.

  • As a member of that fan base that speaks with near-rabid devotion I would say that Fallout 3 has its moments of glory. It should also be noted however, that Bethesda had no connection whatsoever to the first two, but purchased the rights from the original creators: Black Isle Studios. To a large group of original fans there is a feeling that Bethesda failed to generate that feeling of grit and wryness the first two excelled at.

  • Here here! The first time I played the original Fallout, Interplay had changed my perspective on what an rpg was and could be. The fact that during the game there was almost no soundtrack just an eerie sound in the background *shiver*. So so many hours invested in Fallout and Fallout 2. And the sheer depth of the stories oh my god.

  • The music for Fallout was made available for free - it’s by Mark Morgan. It’s a wonderful ambient soundtrack.

  • Hi, I was thinking to buy Fallout 3 but wasn’t sure if I can make it work on my Mac via Vista. Could you tell me what Mac do you have? Thank you

  • I have a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.8GHZ, 6GB RAM and a NVIDIA 8800GT.

Compare your iMac/MacBook/Mac Pro specs against the minimum for Fallout 3.

  • Why should I have to buy a Windows Operating System, just to play your game? Why should I have to install Windows via BootCamp, just to play your game? Why should I even try? All I want is a quality game to play on my Mac. And I’ve played Fallout 3 on a console, and I want to play it on my Mac. Bethesda could at least get some other company to port it. So they don’t “have to waste their time” on converting it. I just want, Fallout 3.

  • to be a true fallout fan, one must have played wasteland…

  • jonny bethesda did not make fallout 1 and 2

  • I played Wasteland on my Apple //c+ in the 80s. I recently picked it up again to play on an emulator and it’s still quite a bit of fun…

  • I own Fallout 1,2 and Tactics but not played them fully yet I have played Fallout 3 until my heart’s content and then further added satisfaction of modding the hell out of the game.

Either way I couldn’t care less whether I am branded as a true fan of fallout or not because I am a true fan of Bethesda Softwork’s games.

P.S stop leeching via bootcamp, get a real gaming machine ;)

  • IMO, even though Macs are great systems do not ever buy one because you want to game or expect to be able to play the latest greatest games without booting into Windows.

it’s that simple. software companies to not have some obligation to make an OS X version of games. i’m talking to you Walker. if you want hassle-free gaming GET A PC!!!!

  • I really wish game developers and publishers would start to man up and start making games capable of operating under Mac OS.
If Mac was gamer friendly, they would dominate the computer market.

In response to Johnny and Roberto

Bethesda bought the rights to “Fallout” in 1999. Black Isle studios developed the game and Interplay published it.

  • Who the fuck are you to tell say people shouldn’t be allowed to plat FO3 without playing the first 2 games? You’re an asshole. Maybe I didn’t have a computer capable of even running Fallout or Fallout 2 (which I didn’t).

I played Fallout 3 and became a fan of the post apocalyptic do-what-you-want RPG. I am going to play 1 and 2 when I get a chance, and if that means I’m not a “true fan” so be it.

Also, yo guys telling people with macs to buy a pc as well instead of just using boot camp can just suck a dick too. Why should I drop $2500 on my Mac, and then more (probably $700+) on another computer just to play games? Considering I have the ability to run windows, doesn’t that pretty much give me a gaming PC at the same time? Bunch of cock suckers.

    • I guess this comment is aimed squarely at me, right between the eyes.

My post on Fallout 3 was a humorous one about the lack of games for Mac OS X and the rabid fan community surrounding the Fallout series. It wasn’t supposed to be elitist, only in a har-har way. You missed that.

Owning a Mac does let you game via Boot Camp, but often there can be problems when GPUs aren’t upgraded for eons. I think Walker meant that if you want to play all games, get a PC. Which makes sense if you’re not fussed about the OS you’re using.

Thanks for your advice on dick sucking - I’ll keep it in mind.

      • I agree with Alex McLarty (Even though i am typing this on a Mac :p). Angry Dad, I think that was bang out of order, especially if you don’t know who the hell the guy is! And fuck the true fan thing, it’s a load of bollocks tbh. If you’re a fan, you’re a fan ^^ But just use bootcamp, i mean my dad wont let me be the administrator until i’m eighteen (which sucks balls), so i can’t download it AND he wont let me upgrade to snow leopard!! Anyway yeah ^^ PC’s are good for games, Macs can be really shit if you’ve got a really slow one like me :D And I could tell it was a Har Har comment so i’m not angry, and i’ve just got to say all you guys have to try BATTLEFIELD HEROES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I played it on a PC it was EPIC!!!! Oh and one more thing, Even Alex uses a Mac, so he can make a comment like that

  • I hate it when people have this air of self importance because they knew about something before someone else. Big deal you played 1 and 2. Get over yourself. Its like people who stop liking a band when they get popular. Bethesda rocks, that’s why I bought the game. It doesn’t matter what they do, they always hit a homerun.

  • I’ve had the Fallout ‘trilogy’ 1, 2 and tactics for aaages, but never been able to get my butt into gear to play them. Now I want to. Starting with Fallout 1..but Crossover games isn’t doing it’s thing proper - to do with 56 colour support.. anyone have any ideas on how to play these games on my 10.5.6 intel mac? (I won’t be buying a pc and would rather not Boot camp) is there another way WINE etc? I dunno.. any help would be aces…

  • I meant 256 colour support…

  • I loved the FO 1 and 2, and for me although I liked FO3, it just didn’t capture the feeling I got in the first 2. In those it felt like there was a whole world to explore filled with possibilities, but FO3 felt small and limited. I suppose the good side was that at least my game didn’t end just because I failed to find the water chip fast enough =)

    • Paul, I just bought Fallout: Tactics from GOG’s holiday sale. (It works under CrossOver.) I remember buying it, shelving it, then selling it later. I also remember that many people didn’t like it, but I’m on this kick for tactical games and I simply love the Fallout universe.

  • Just came across this. Thought I would mention to you guys, there is now a port. Yes, fallout 3 for mac.

Sadly, you need at least 3 posts in their forum to be able to read that section, but for fallout 3 on your macs? I found it worth it. Anyway, the port was done by one of the guys from the porting team. The news has been popping up all over the net. Their site for the forum section is: http://forum.portingteam.com

once you have the minimum post count, the direct link to the thread with the fallout 3 port is here:
    http://forum.portingteam.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=2356&start=0

They run a wrapper system (you still need the full game in order to use their wrappers). Their wrappers kind-of hold the windows version inside them, and allow you to run it on your system as if it were native. The porting process is weird to explain, but anyhow, just follow the instructions on their site and it’s all there. Or just browse around if you fancy working out how it all works and what else has been ported by them.

  • Yes there is a fallout 3 for mac, you download a trial version of crossover and get a fallout 3 disk and install it, some friends and I did this and it works, trust me.

    • No the crossover version might possibly work but it will suffer from extreme lag and major bugs. One of the developers from the porting team but together a specifically configured bundle of software that also contains wine. This was named wineskin, and its been developed more ever since, one of the latest supports fallout 3 to an amazing degree of performance.

  • Oh fucking low move. Way to title your blog to horde traffic.

  • Fallout rocks!
Totally agree wiht what you’d said.
Even worth to buy a Dos bugger!
