Meet Brog and Grag. In Cro-Mag Rally by Pangea Software, Cro Magnon man exists in this Upper Paleolithic racer and also in the North East of England. You see, Brog and Grag bear an uncanny resemblance to many of the inhabitants in my area; low brows, a tendency to drive recklessly, grunt like speech, tribal adornment. It’s great to see things haven’t changed in the last 45,000 years!
Featuring nine tracks, eleven vehicles and an assortment of weapons and power ups, Cro-Mag offers a Mario Kart-gone-Stonehenge feel, all the while utilising the accelerometers inside your iPhone to steer (in Cro-Mag speak: tilt iPhone to steer!). The coolest track is Atlantis where Grog or Grag pilots an um, Paleolithic submarine. Don’t question, just accept it…
I’d have preferred to have seen a Campaign or Story mode but instead Cro-Mag lets you play whatever track you want with whatever vehicle you want off the bat. An obvious way to improve the game would be to add an online score system too.
Cro-Mag is easier to control than other accelerometer enabled games like Super Monkey Ball. Sliding around corners is easy and so is correcting your mistakes. Even better is the ability to change the sensitivity of steering if you’re cack handed, like me!
Cro-Mag is a game that has seen much love from Brian Greenstone of Pangea; original music, sound effects and neat graphics. I do feel the game could have benefitted from a story mode to keep players hooked and to give a small sense of achievement. As it stands Cro-Mag feels like an exercise, not a game.
