Psystar: attack of the clones

[singlepic=22,250,170,,center]

I spoke to Christian Infante at Psystar a few weeks ago about their particular brand of computers: Open Computers.

The Open Computer is a PC that works just like a Mac with Apple’s latest operating system OS X 10.5 a.k.a. Leopard. With the Open Computer you can run OS X natively as if you had purchased an expensive Apple computer except that, while paying less, you receive more.

By using a hacked illegal Devil modified version of MacOSX, they’ve got it working on non-Apple hardware.

Apple do not want you to do this. Apple have tight control over their operating system and hardware. This is why everything just works.

The argument is that Apple can’t do this. It’s illegal. Anti-trust violations, that sort of thing. Psystar says:

What if Microsoft said you can only install Windows on Dell Computers? What if Honda said that, after you buy their car, you could only drive the roads they said you could?

I really have no clue as to how this will pan out. Reality and the law are unconnected.

Myself and Chris had a brief chat, but an interesting one. Things were said; first on the record, then off, then on and then off. It was all a bit confusing, but there was talk about the future of Psystar. We left it at that and I sent some interview questions for Chris to answer.

Weeks later, I’ve had no reply. Possibly because Apple have begun proceedings against Psystar. I emailed Chris yesterday to see what was happening and my email bounced. Spooky.

I spoke to Chris on the phone today and he maintains that Psystar are still selling Open Computers. He couldn’t talk about the current legal situation with Apple, but did state that the best way for the community to support Psystar is to buy their machines.

Chris didn’t want to answer any of my questions but he was rather eager to sell me an Open Computer. Since Apple have requested that all Open Computers that have shipped with OSX installed be recalled, I might just wait…
