ET:QW: Nail ‘em

showoff_0.gif

Initial fear of ET:QW has given way to admiration. Not only have Aspyr done a stellar job of porting the plucky GDF and gnarly Strogg to the Mac, but id and Splash Damage (the original developers of the game) have created a mutliplayer worthy of attention.

I explained a while ago that the silly fastness of ET:QW in contrast to the simplicity of BF2142 had unnerved me. That has now passed.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

I live on the battlefield. Of the future. I suddenly feel like Kyle Reece from The Terminator. With glasses. And less muscle. Anyway, I do fight on the Battlefield regularly, in the year 2142. I’m so used to fighting in this year that when it came to fighting in ET:QW, I fell to pieces. I wasn’t used the speed, the pace and scale of warfare.

It’s literally taken me from the launch of ET:QW till now to start enjoying the game. That’s not a bad thing, that tells you more about my mind than the game (I fear change). ET:QW is silly fast, not squad based in your typical ‘join a group’ way, huge, mission focused and geared for players that actually want to work together. Did I mention silly fast?

As you may know from your own experience in FPS multiplayer games, teamwork is that thing that annoying players like me harp on about. Over and over and over. Usually people lone wolf around the map, sit and whore mines or just abuse others. Isn’t multiplayer fun?

My advice for ET:QW is: join a clan. Or find a group of players and stick with them. The game is complex, fast and varied. You need a good lot of players to enjoy it. Earlier today I tried to blow up an objective armed with a Nail gun. I nailed a few of the enemy, even planted the explosives. But my team weren’t there to back me up. This resulted in a few colourful words in team chat, that cannot be repeated here.

If you fancy helping me make my mind up about ET:QW, come find me in game: harveypooka. I’ll be the one pointing a Nailgun at your face. And missing. Silly fast, silly fast…

BF2142 Mac users left out in the cold

bf2142.png

Mac users have been left out in the cold once again by EA, DICE and Transgaming, with the 1.5 patch for Mac still in development weeks after the same patch has been released for PC. The 1.5 patch for PC was released nearly two months ago, bringing new content and performance tweaks. Mac users are unable to play on any server that has updated (about 99% of them).

To Gnome or not to Gnome

This is a Mac gaming site. That’s why I’m writing about Half Life 2 Episode 2. With me? Great.

The Half Life series is probably the finest bunch of computer games ever made. If you disagree with me go play Frogger, you Neanderthal scum.

EVE Online: I’ll take your brain to another dimension!

harveypooka.jpg

I started playing World of Warcraft in 2006. After a year I quit. Every now and then I wake up in the middle of the night, screaming. Screaming about the role of the Druid. About the forced Restoration stints. The mockery when I tried to tank. The heckling when I tried to DPS. Aside from the horrific, mind shattering nay-saying about Druids, I loved being a Druid. Jack of all trades, master of none. That’s me. Best way to be. Prowl as a, um, purple cat, rage around as an ugly, tiny faced bear and ponder like a bearded, pompous, green haired giant.

Ah, life was good!
